Procrastination is the worst thing anyone can have. Unfortunately, I excel the art of it.
A few days ago, a grandma brought her grandchild to our eye outpatient clinic. The young 19 yo boy had bilateral congenital cataract whereby cataract op was performed. He subsequently developed glaucoma and eventually caused blindness in his right eye. Currently he has a right phthisical eye. His streak of bad luck did not end there. A few years later, his left eye developed rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and he went through vitrectomy but somewhat still continued to have poor vision. A recent surgical decision was made to make him aphakic and a surgical posterior capsulotomy was performed. Nonetheless, vision was still 1/60. He attended school until this year as he could no longer see.
Along my medical journey, there will always be such cases that set me down, emotionally. I don’t know what I can do for him besides referring him to low vision clinic. This was a young man who could have gone on to college or university. Right now, he could only stay home with an uncertain future. Perhaps, I could be their sight. Time to check out apps like bemyeyes to volunteer.
