This seems to be a long overdue post since I have returned to Malaysia almost 4 years ago.
Oh well, besides the insane amount of moolah one gets in the land down under, I am generally quite happy to be at where I am at now.
Before returning to Malaysia
There are many reasons (some might smirk in disbelief) we are drawn home. Be it family, friends, comfort etc. but if you have made up your mind to return to Malaysia once completing your internship/resident year overseas, my advice is to plan early. To be eligible for full registration with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC), there are compulsory rotations which we have to go through and this includes: General Surgery, General Medicine, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics and A&E terms. Internship in Aussie was one year so it was impossible for me to complete all core rotations in one year. I was fortunate to secure the other compulsory postings in 2nd year as a resident in Brissy and managed to obtain full registration.
Kindly refer to the link below for the lists of documentation required by MMC.
Another piece of important advice to my fellow comrades/juniors was to obtain a certificate or statement of completed rotations from your respective hospitals. This will come in handy for MMC so that you have evidence to substantiate your claims of successfully completing core rotations. I had to email all the respective hospital admins and thank god for all these friendly aussie admin staffs. They were super efficient and I didn’t have any trouble getting them. (Something to learn from, hey? -work hard, play hard!)
The process didn’t take too long and they got back to me within 2 months time.
Obtaining a full registration though, is only half the battle won as there is another long gruelling waiting time for placement in training hospitals. I will discuss more in the following piece about applying with spa and the ehouseman website for contract medical officer.
