I wish to say that the above story is fictitious and unfortunately it isn’t.
I have been in a posting involving untrained little humans who aren’t conformed to societal etiquettes for the past few months. Besides increasing my chances of fattening my ENT colleagues wallet, I have generally been enjoying the term so far. Doing as many phacos and ECCEs as possible with very helpful senior surgeons 🙂 Super duper thankful for that. And life has been generally quite relaxing without exam stress 🙂
I met this young lady around 20+ of age a few weeks ago. She has a history of retinal malignancy (Rb) involving both eyes and had one of her eyes enucleated with the other eye (very low and reserved vision). She has since been on annual surveillance and met her hubs in the school of blind (that itself is another story). Unfortunately, I found a mass in her posterior globe which likely indicates recurrence of Rb. What makes the matter worse is she’s currently pregnant.
A foreseeable future is her remaining eye will have to be removed and she will never see her baby. The next question is when are we supposed to deliver her baby as she will require systemic chemotherapy. All these deserve an MDT meeting on its own involving and O and G doctors, radiologists and anaesthetists plus us the ophthalmologists.
It just struck me, as a person, I wonder the reason why someone has to go through so much in life. But her positivity in life is an inspiration. I sincerely wish the best and will pray for this beautiful lady. I only wish that she continues to be surrounded by love from her family and pray for the little one to be delivered safely.
While doing the MDT slides for the meeting, I also happened to listen to one of my fav singers Mika Nakashima 🙂 She is also another inspiration who never gave up despite all the setbacks in her life (that almost costs here entire career). I hope one day when Jesus returns, all this misery will dissipate and poof go away.
OK i should be going to bed soon.
